A missing child can disappear at 1 mile per minute…

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

How fast is one mile per minute?  Well the obvious answer is 60 miles per hour, but let’s look at a graphical representation of exactly how fast 1 mile per minute really is:

A Missing Child Can Disappear At 1 Mile Per Minute

A Missing Child Can Disappear At 1 Mile Per Minute

Click on the image for a larger version and you will see 12 concentric circles based around Lincoln, Nebraska.  The inner most circle represents just how far a missing child can disappear in 1 hour.  Each additional circle represents an additional hour, with the outer most circle representing only 12 hours.   That’s 720 miles.

Even 1 mile is well out of the range of any RFID based child location system on the market today, in fact most of them do not even have a range of more than 600 feet – that’s just 2 football fields.  At 1 mile (5280 feet) a minute (60 seconds), a missing child could be out of range of any of these RFID based child location systems in just 8.8 seconds (5280 feet / 60 seconds).  So within 10 seconds of your child going missing he or she could be well outside of the range of any RFID based child location system.  Just 10 seconds.  And that means there’s not even an indication of which direction to start searching.

That’s why a GPS child locator is so much more effective in locating a missing child than an RFID based system.  The sentryGPSid child locator is not a locally based system with a limited range.  It has the ability to locate a missing child anywhere in the world, through any internet connected computer.  As long as the sentryGPSid can pick up a cellular signal in order to broadcast it’s location back up to our webportal.

Additionally, not only does the sentryGPSid allow you to locate your device anywhere a cellular signal can be obtained, our geofencing technology also lets you know BEFORE your child goes missing by sending you customized alerts as soon as your child leaves their predefined safe zones.  You can also send a text message to your device at any time and it will respond back it’s exact location as well as a link to a map which will show you it’s exact position.

The sentryGPSid™ is the smallest, most intelligent and most affordable GPS personal location device on the market today.  Bar none.   The sentryGPSid™ has the ability to alert a parent that their child is wandering BEFORE they go missing, and in the event of the unthinkable, the sentryGPSid™ provides parents a way to track their child’s GPS device in real time through our industry leading GPS tracking web portal.

At a price of just $185 for the device, and a $19/month service fee, the sentryGPSid™ is hands-down the most affordable GPS child location device available today.   Other providers will charge almost 3 times that amount for their GPS child location devices and services – and they don’t provide any additional features, while some even want to charge parents more for features we include with our GPS tracking web portal!

SentryGPS webportal version 1.1b is set to debut!

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

Stay tuned and check back often as we discuss all of the new features in depth as the update is released;  but we just can’t resist giving a sneak preview of some of the enhanced functionality and features.

Here are just a few of the features v1.1b will include:

  • Enhanced mapping that allows for easy viewing of the last 1 to 50 data points of each device and the ability to display the geofences right on the tracking map.
  • An easy “Zoom to Device” feature – this is especially great for accounts with multiple devices.
  • A Hitorical Map Portlet that now lets you visually see the travel history of a selected device on the map as well as in text.  And the travel history is now exportable too!
  • And my favorite – and industry first, Polygonal Geofences.  This makes the SentryGPS webportal the first in the industry to not limit you to just radial geofences.  We worked hard on this feature because we know not every safe or forbidden zone is a circle!

Tech Tip: Know when your GPS’ battery is low

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

The SentryGPS webportal allows you to create an alert that will automatically inform you when your sentryGPSid’s battery is low.  A low battery alert is easy to create under the Settings tab just like any other alert.  Simply:

  • create a new alert
  • type a name & description
  • under Conditions choose Sensor Reports
  • click transducer then select Low Battery and click OK
  • click Add then Next
  • under Actions select Create Alarm and Notify
  • Click Alarm Name to name the alarm, then Info to choose the alarm level, and Alarm Content to modify the alarm message
  • then click Add, Next, and Finish

there you go, now you will be alerted (by the method you have configured for the chosen alarm level) whenever the sensor detects a low battery

Advantages of the sentryGPSid™ over RFID based location systems

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Before we begin explaining why the sentryGPSid™ is a much better option than the RFID based location systems, we will start with an explanation of the underlying technologies of each.

The sentryGPSid™ utilizes GPS technology. GPS is an abbreviation for Global Positioning System, the key word here being Global. From Wikipedia:

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) developed by the United States Department of Defense and managed by the United States Air Force 50th Space Wing. It is the only fully functional GNSS in the world, can be used freely, and is often used by civilians for navigation purposes. It uses a constellation of between 24 and 32 Medium Earth Orbit satellites that transmit precise microwave signals, which allow GPS receivers to determine their current location, the time, and their velocity.

In contrast, RFID (an abbreviation for Radio-frequency identification) is a much more locally based system. Information is sent to and read from RFID tags by a reader using radio waves. In passive systems, which are the most common, an RFID reader transmits an energy field that “wakes up” the tag and provides the power for the tag to respond to the reader. In active systems, a battery in the tag is used to boost the effective operating range of the tag. You may be familiar with short range RFID systems if you have ever used a proximity card for a door at work or a parking garage with secure access.

So, just by looking at the respective definitions of the two technologies you can start to see how the sentryGPSid™ and it’s GPS based technology is far superior to RFID based location systems. But the fact a sentryGPSid™ can be located most anywhere in the world is not the only advantage that separates the sentryGPSid™ from other child and adult locator devices. The sentryGPSid™ also provides what is known as “bread-crumbing”, or the storage and display of historical points of data. By default, when a user logs into the SentryGPS web portal he or she will automatically be provided up to the last 50 points of data which were transmitted by their sentryGPSid™. This means that a directional history can be derived even if the exact location of the GPS device can not be ascertained due to severe environmental conditions.

With an RFID based system, there is no data basing of previous locations or bread crumbing due to the fact the position of the transmitter is only considered relevant to the location of the receiver – not the actual position of the device on the globe. So if no signal an be picked up by the receiver, than there is no way of telling which direction to even start searching for the missing child or adult.

Also, while on the topic of the transmitter and receiver for an RFID system, that brings up another great benefit of the sentryGPSid™ over RFID based systems. RFID based systems require two pieces in order for the system to work: 1. the device on the child or Alzheimer’s patient, and 2. the receiver or “locater”. If the receiver is not readily at hand, the transmitter on the child or Alzheimer’s patient is almost worthless. Some of the systems out there today for Alzheimer’s patients require the local sheriff to invest as much as $3,000 for these RFID receivers in order for the programs to even be offered in your county.

With the sentryGPSid™ you can locate your GPS device through any internet connected computer, anywhere in the world. All you need is your username and password to the SentryGPS webportal and you will be able to track your device. So there is no expensive equipment for the sheriff’s office or local law enforcement agency to purchase. Additionally, we are developing applications for the iPhone, Windows Mobile phones, and other smart phones that will allow you to easily track your GPS device directly from your cell phone through a similar map-based interface. We are also going to give you the ability to send a text message to our webportal that will reply with the exact location of your device and a link that will open up your phones internet browser to display a map.

Those are just a few, brief examples of why the sentryGPSid™ is a far superior option to any of the RFID based child or Alzheimer location systems on the market today. I’ll make certain to outline more benefits in the very near future while we also release some great new functionality!
