sentryGPSid GPS tracking portal safe zone overview
With the sentryGPSid GPS tracking portal and our GL100 GPS personal tracking device, you can create up to five radial geofences (safe zones) per GPS tracking device. Each GPS device will always show a list of Zones 1 – 5, even if no zone is yet created. You can create your zones in any order. and can easily see which zones are active or inactive at any given time.
If you have more than 1 GPS personal location device associated with your account, you can switch between GPS location devices by utilizing the drop-down above the list of geofences.
Create and edit each of your radial geofences individually, but view all of your geofences for each device on one tracking map.

Creating a new GPS radial geofence
To create a new radial geofence for any of your GPS location device, simply follow the steps outlined below:
Step 1: Enter the address you wish to create the geofence around, then click the Go button.
Step 2: Enter the distance, and choose your unit of measure for the radius of the geofence, then click Go.
Step 3: Name your zone and click the Create Zone button.
Edit a GPS radial geofence
You can also easily edit your previously created and saved geofences for each GPS location device. Start by clicking the “edit” button located under the geofence which you would like to edit. Then edit the center of the location by using the drag-and-drop directions below, or edit the name or radius by entering the new information in the pop-up window. Then just remember to click the “Commit Zone Updates” button.
Hint: You can also deactive or delete any of your zones by clicking the corresponding button as well. (if you deactivate the zone, you won’t receive any alerts for breaches of that zone).
Recenter a GPS radial geofence
One of the unique features of our GPS tracking portal is the ability to “drag-and-drop” the center of your geofence on the setup map in order to recenter your geofence.
After entering the address for a new zone, or clicking “edit” in order to update a current zone, simply click on the red icon on the map that signifies the center of your zone, and hold the mouse cursor down. Now drag your mouse cursor to whatever location you wish for the center of the zone to be and release the mouse button. Now just re-save your zone!
Hint: If you switch the map to “Hybrid” view prior to starting the drag-and-drop process you can see the actual buildings and other geographical features to help ensure your GPS location device’s geofence is centered exactly where you want it.

How fast is one mile per minute? Well the obvious answer is 60 miles per hour, but let’s look at a graphical representation of exactly how fast 1 mile per minute really is:

A Missing Child Can Disappear At 1 Mile Per Minute
Click on the image for a larger version and you will see 12 concentric circles based around Lincoln, Nebraska. The inner most circle represents just how far a missing child can disappear in 1 hour. Each additional circle represents an additional hour, with the outer most circle representing only 12 hours. That’s 720 miles.
Even 1 mile is well out of the range of any RFID based child location system on the market today, in fact most of them do not even have a range of more than 600 feet – that’s just 2 football fields. At 1 mile (5280 feet) a minute (60 seconds), a missing child could be out of range of any of these RFID based child location systems in just 8.8 seconds (5280 feet / 60 seconds). So within 10 seconds of your child going missing he or she could be well outside of the range of any RFID based child location system. Just 10 seconds. And that means there’s not even an indication of which direction to start searching.
That’s why a GPS child locator is so much more effective in locating a missing child than an RFID based system. The sentryGPSid child locator is not a locally based system with a limited range. It has the ability to locate a missing child anywhere in the world, through any internet connected computer. As long as the sentryGPSid can pick up a cellular signal in order to broadcast it’s location back up to our webportal.
Additionally, not only does the sentryGPSid allow you to locate your device anywhere a cellular signal can be obtained, our geofencing technology also lets you know BEFORE your child goes missing by sending you customized alerts as soon as your child leaves their predefined safe zones. You can also send a text message to your device at any time and it will respond back it’s exact location as well as a link to a map which will show you it’s exact position.

Geofences Can Warn BEFORE a loved one wanders
All too often a reactive approach is taken when it comes to missing children and adults. Whether it is a wandering autistic child, a wandering adult with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, or a child that has been abducted; a reactive approach unfortunately can result in finding the loved one after it’s too late. Research tells us that a missing child can disappear at a mile a minute, and also that many adults with dementia may not survive more than 24 hours if they have wandered from their home.
The SentryGPS ID personal location GPS device gives you the ability to create both custom “Safe” & “Forbidden” zones through geofencing technology. A Safe zone allows you to receive an alert (either voice, email, or SMS) as soon as your loved one’s SentryGPs ID leaves the zone. So you can be alerted BEFORE your loved one travels or wanders too far. A Forbidden zone works exactly the same, except you receive an alert when your loved one enters the zone instead of leaving it.
How hard is it to create a Safe or Forbidden zone? Creating a safe or forbidden zone is a matter of four easy steps:
- Type the address you would like to be the center of your zone. For a Safe zone, this may be you home address.
- Select the radius you would like for the zone. This can be anything from 20 meters to 20 miles, or more.
- Select whether the zone is a Safe or Forbidden zone.
- Name and save the zone.
Your zone will now be activated for your selected device and you can now customize your alert preferences to be warned anytime your loved one’s GPS device crosses the boundaries you have created.
Geofencing technology used to create Safe and Forbidden zones is just another example of how the SentryGPS ID, and it’s GPS technology can help to protect your loved ones – whether they are a child or adult!

SentryGPS ID - just slightly larger than a standard 9-volt battery!
Although the sentryGPSid and SentryKIDS GPS have one of the smallest form factors on the market today (only slightly larger than a 9-volt battery!), some children may still balk at carrying one on their person instead of just in their backpack. But let’s face it, the best place for a GPS child location device is directly on the child him or herself so that the child is being tracked and not just their backpack. So here at Sentry, we’ve thought up several ways to help teach your children that it can be enjoyable to keep their sentryGPSid in their pocket.
Show your small children how to “look themselves up” through our secure webportal. Unlike some child GPS devices, the sentryGPSid does not charge per location request, or limit the number of times you are allowed to locate your device according to what plan you have chosen – so use that to your advantage and teach your child the fun of seeing themselves travel around town. Or even better, when you take that next family vacation to Disney or the beach (which could very well your motivating reason for purchasing a child GPS device in the first place), show your son or daughter the map of them on their journey. (Very soon you will even be able to do this from your iPhone or Windows Smart Phone!). Then “build” their excitement by asking them things on their journey such as “I wonder where Mickey is on the map right now”, or “look how much closer we are to Mickey than we were before”.
Remember to also enforce the concept of the “fun” of tracking themselves on the map throughout their “regular” weeks at home and around town too – the sentryGPSid isn’t just for protecting your child on long trips or vacations!
This single tip should help with the younger children who have a curious mind, but Sentry hasn’t stopped there. We have more tips AND innovations to help get older kids to want to keep their child GPS device with them too! So keep checking back, and more importantly, get your child GPS today and start feeling better about knowing where your son or daughter is today!

Autism occurs in approximately one in 150 births. Autism is four times more prevalent in boys than girls. Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability with a 10-17% annual growth rate.
About 90 percent of autistic children are prone to wandering off from home, school, or a group situation. This is known as elopement and unfortunately, it is a very common problem. It is very risky for people with autism who are often unable to communicate where they live or even their name.
As children become teens, and teens become adults, more and more will be placed in group home living environments. There the problem of elopement is especially difficult for the team caring for the people with autism, and for the parents and family of the group home resident.
Wandering autistic children (and adults) are another group who could benefit greatly from the sentryGPSid personal location device.
